We limit our trips to the upper Manistee River because it is unique in many ways. The land along its banks previously owned by a power company which eventually donated the land to the state, preserving the beautiful wild areas for public use.
The result is a wonderful river fed by springs and little affected by rains which would cause other rivers to silt up and flood. Although not completely free of hazards, it is rated Class I for ease of navigation and safety; perfect for beginners.

Our Promise To You!
- Training. Both theoretical and practical training and orientation are provided as desired. Mastering canoe strokes, camping skills, understanding river dynamics and other skills can be addressed through videos, chalk talks, and hands-on-practice. River Journeys is geared toward the experienced and inexperienced alike, providing a safe experience on the water and in camp.
- Low-impact camping. (Practices which protect pristine areas, water and wildlife). RiverJourneys packs out more than is packed in. We minimize disposable containers, use small fires, and encourage individual and group hygiene in ways that do not contaminate land and water.
- Lots of Fun!

A recreational opportunity in a beautiful setting, River Journeys reconnects you with the out of doors. Canoe camping is enjoyed on the Manistee River, just north of Cadillac, Michigan, a class I river rated for beginner skills. Past guests have included groups of friends, church youth groups, father son as well as father daughter groups. In addition, corporate teams, and individuals who just wanted to enjoy some time in the out of doors have found the experience helpful to team building and camradre. Completely outfitted with all equipment, RiverJourneys guests enjoy scenery, wildlife, as well as the clean and cool waters of the Manistee. All our guests provide is their clothing, insect repellent and a flashlight. Past guests rave about our campfire cooking!
In addition, there is no need for prior canoe experience! Orientation and training are essential components of RiverJourneys. Staff will teach necessary skills, and are more than happy to spend time with you before departure. Detailed lists of what to pack and training videos make preparation thorough and simple. We also assist guests in sharing the responsibilities of camp life.
